Pressure Converters

One standard atmosphere equals 101,325 pascals, 14.696 psi, 1.01325 bar, or 760 torr — four different numbers for exactly the same physical condition, which is why pressure conversions come up constantly in engineering, medicine, and meteorology. Pressure is force per unit area: a pascal is one newton acting on one square meter, the smallest of the common units and the SI base.

In practice the unit you start with depends on where you work. Tire gauges read in psi. Weather maps use hectopascals (hPa) or millibars. Laboratory vacuum work uses torr, a unit defined as exactly 1/760 of a standard atmosphere. Industrial hydraulics often specifies bar. The pascal's prefix scale (kPa, MPa, GPa) works like any SI unit — each step multiplies by 1,000 — so shifting between them is just moving a decimal point.
