Temperature Converters

Water freezes at 0 °C, 32 °F, and 273.15 K — three numbers for the same physical event, and the gap between them exposes why temperature scales behave differently from almost every other unit conversion. Converting meters to feet is a straight multiplication; converting Celsius to Fahrenheit is not. Each scale places its zero point at an arbitrary reference, so you must add or subtract an offset before scaling — °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, not just a single factor.

That offset is the one thing that trips people up most. Kelvin and Rankine are absolute scales that start at true zero (no molecular motion), so converting between them actually is a single multiply — but the moment Celsius or Fahrenheit enters the picture, the offset comes back.
